This popular complication has been around for many moons and there’s a good reason for that. Most luxury watch brands boast mechanical timepieces with ability to keep the correct time, day, date and year without the need to adjust (until 2100!) as they are incredibly useful. Without the need to download or upgrade, every glance provides key information, so what’s not to love?
Here are our top five perpetual calendar watches released this year:
Hublot Big Bang Unico Perpetual Calendar Sapphire
You’ll be lucky to lay your hands on this style statement as production was limited to just 50 pieces.
With true Hublot panache, this model moulds a stunning sapphire case with in-house HUB1270 UNICO automatic movement, providing time, perpetual calendar, and chronograph functionality.
Big and begging to be adored, its four sleek subdials display both perpetual calendar (day, date, month, leap year indicator, moon phase) and chronograph indicators.
Audemars Piguet Code 11.59 Perpetual Calendar
From the creator of the world’s thinnest perpetual calendar, comes the Code 11.59 – a beautifully crafted design featuring the in-house calibre 5134.
With serious design attention given to the case and dials, this new watch from Audemars Piguet is just over 4mm thick and includes an astronomical moon display that requires adjustment once every 122 years and 108 days.
IWC Big Pilot’s Perpetual Calendar Spitfire
A pellaton winding system and two barrels, the in-house 52615 calibre makes this an impressive timepiece. Along with its slick bronze case, olive green dial and brown calfskin strap, it also boasts a seven-day power reserve.
The IWC perpetual calendar recognises the different lengths of the months and leap years and can be easily set via the crown. The best feature is the double moon display which shows the entity correctly for both the northern and southern hemispheres. And the best news is this watch will only need to be adjusted by one day after 577.5 years!
Frederique Constant Perpetual Calendar Tourbillon Manufacture
This is a unique piece on show for this year’s Only Watch – the biennial charity auction of unique timepieces created by the finest brands for research on Duchenne muscular dystrophy.
What is truly striking about this dial is that it is created from a meteorite that landed in Namibia and also features an exhibition caseback. Priced at just under £17,000, you even get the limited number engraved on the cage.
The watch is powered by the self-winding calibre FC-975, while the trusty perpetual calendar displays the day, date, month and leap year indication.
Patek Philippe Grand Complications 5327G
And our favourite of the bunch …yes another from Patek. This time a new self-winding perpetual calendar with a clean-looking blue dial and strap, making this watch, complete with its white gold 39mm case, stand out a mile.
With beautiful lugs and gold applied Breguet numerals, finished off with a smart clasp, it’s perhaps not hard to understand the £69,000 price tag.
